The background of Craps dates all the way back to a dice game known as Hazard, which dates all the way back to Bernard de Mandeville in New Orleans in 1813. Hazard is believed to be a by-product of Azzahr, which means ‘the die’ a game enjoyed by Arabs.
The game developed as it spread out from the Arab countries to France and then to England. By the early eighteenth century, formal rules for Hazard had been developed. France started playing the British variation of Hazard and is assumed to have been brought to America by early French colonists. In the mid-1700s, when the English defeated the French in British North America, the French settlers moved to Louisiana. Dice were enjoyed on river boats, casinos and wharfs and a streamlined ‘American’ version of Craps was developed. The game headed west and is a favoured game that is participated in all over the U.S. and around the world.
The name ‘Craps’ is believed to be a French enunciation of the term crabs, which refers to a pair of ‘1s’. There are 2 general varieties of Craps that are bet on-street Craps and bank Craps. Street caps, accurately called because it’s competed in on the streets is where a hurler sets a point and then attempts to make that point. The betting is made either for or against the tosser and another player has to cover the bet for the game of craps to continue.
In casino Craps, which is the familiar game, played in casinos, the casino funds the casino game. The participants wager against the house-the casino covers all of the wagers of all of the gamblers. Craps used to be a very well-liked casino game but in the past 20 years had split itself and different games, such as poker and chemin de fer became more well-known. However, Craps is observing a come back in fame once again in internet betting houses and in real casinos.
