Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps developed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. A few consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he established the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
