Master Craps – Tips and Tactics: The Past of Craps

[ English ]

Be brilliant, play cunning, and master craps the proper way!

Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. A few consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
