Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
