Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Current craps developed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
