[ English ]

Be brilliant, play brilliant, and become versed in craps the ideal way!

Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French relocated down south and located refuge in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he established the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
