Master Craps – Hints and Schemes: The Past of Craps

Be clever, play clever, and become versed in craps the ideal way!

Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French relocated south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. Many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
