Learn to Play Craps – Pointers and Plans: The Background of Craps

Be cunning, play clever, and master craps the ideal way!

Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French moved south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he established the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
