Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French moved south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
