Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French relocated down south and located sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he created the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
