Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
