Be cunning, play smart, and pickup craps the proper way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French moved south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
