Be smart, play cunning, and pickup craps the correct way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French headed down south and discovered refuge in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. Many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he established the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
