Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
