Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
